Welcome Back to School
We hope everyone had a relaxing summer and are ready for a new school year. We look forward to working with you again this year. The Institute has a number of new programs and even a new staff member. Lindsay Shearer, a highly skilled and energetic therapist, joined the staff several months ago and is available for some lower fee cases.
Parent Skills Manual
The Right to be the Grown-up: Helping Parents Be Parents to Their Difficult Teens is our new Parent Skills Training Program that has been published by Zeig, Tucker and Theisen, Inc. It can be viewed/purchased at Amazon.com. Our program teaches parents new ways to handle their difficult adolescents. We have targeted the very difficult adolescents that have been in therapy and other programs to no avail. We are available to provide training for you to do the workshop with parents or we would be happy to do the 5 session program for parents at your school. Beginning Saturday, October 11, 10-12 pm the Institute will be running a parent group at our office in Southfield. Contact us for more information.
Empowering Girls
Girls seem to be experiencing serious difficulties figuring out how to express themselves as young women while trying to find acceptance among their peers. We are seeing more serious symptoms involving self-harm, social and academic problems and dangerous choices (sex/drugs) with little thought toward the outcome. A Girls' Empowerment Group will be starting Thursday, October 9th, 4:30-6pm at the Institute. The goal of the group is to develop connections to strong women in their lives, strengthen their sense of self and identify ways to have healthy control over their lives. A family intake will be required for involvement in the group. Contact Dr. Margerum for more information. Stay Tuned
In late winter/early spring 2004 look for our two day workshop featuring Institute staff as well as other local experts. James Windell, author and therapist at the Oakland County Court, will be presenting on his latest book about postpartum depression. Other topics will include adolescent issues, storytelling in therapy and multi-problem families. Please check out our website at mifamilytherapy.com to see what other trainings and publications are upcoming.
Staying out of the Divorce Wars
Many of the youngsters you deal with come from divorced families these days. Unpleasant divorces tend to drag everyone into the midst of their chaos even after many years. Here are a few ways that school professionals can avoid this predicament:
Send information out to both parents Involve both parents in regular and disciplinary conferences-If parental conflict is too high, parents may need to be seen separately Avoid making negative comments about the other parent or even talking about them if they are not present- It's easy to fall into the trap of buddying up with the more social parent but that may just increase hostility from the other parent. Behave as though you believe that all parents mean well and expect them to behave appropriately
Late-Emerging Reading Difficulties
We have noticed for some time that many of the teenagers that we work with have had problems in school beginning in the 4th or 5th grade that escalate to increasingfailure by the time high school comes around. An article, with the above title, appeared in the Journal of Educational Psychology 2003, Vol. 95, No. 2,211-224. Leach, Scarborough and Rescorla studied reading disabilities that do not emerge until late elementary school because they are related to more complex decoding or comprehension skills. They may be overlooked due to the student's previous school success and if not addressed only lead to further failure in school, frustration and giving up. Although, the majority of behavior problems are just that, it doesn't hurt to rule out learning problems.
Please contact us at (248) 593-4784 if you want to consult on a case or discuss the appropriateness of a referral. Ask to speak with Jerome Price, Judith Margerum or Lindsay Shearer.
